Bait and Switch
The Merriam-Webster Dictionary defines Bait and Switch as: a selling method in which a customer is attracted by the advertisement
of a low-priced product but then is encouraged to buy a more expensive
one.
In the online world I define Bait and Switch as: luring people with a photo (either not yourself, or a picture from 10 years ago) and then showing up.
I feel like I have been a victim to this trickery. Yes, this makes me sound shallow, but I would not have messaged them if I had known what they truly looked liked.
First Incident: The first Bait and Switch occurred through Tinder. We started messaging each other and decided to skype after because it looked like we weren't going to meet anytime soon. Lets just say I'm pretty good at keeping a straight face and I had something else up on my screen while chatting with him. His Tinder picture was of a guy who looked outdoorsy (he even said he was), clean shaved, and approx in his late 20's early 30's. What I got was a bearded guy who looked like he hasn't left his couch in a year and he looked like he was in his late 30's early 40's!! After 15 mins of chatting I told him I had to go and deleted him off my Skype account.
Second Incident: I messaged a guy who just had a body shot.. I thought, "hmm.. Asian guy with a nice body!! Why not?!" My friends told me he was just in it for a hook up and other friends warned me he's probably an uggo! My friends were wrong about the former, but correct about the latter. He wasn't completely ugly, but was not what I was expecting. He was balding at the back, sort of nerdy looking (which I don't mind), and short (perhaps 5'6.5ish). All in all, pretty good conversation, considering it was all about TV and Movies.. That's all he's into and luckily I do watch ample TV and Movies. He has traveled a lot which made his stories interesting. But his drive and characteristics is not what I'm looking for in a guy. Yes, I am not the hottest person in the room nor the smartest, but I would like to talk about more than TV, Movies, and traveling.
Have I learned something from these experiences?? Probably not.. Looks aren't EVERYTHING, but they are a big chunk of attraction. Looks fade, yes I understand that.. I am hoping to find someone where our looks can fade together!
